Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiróz
Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz (August 26, 1918 – December 29, 2018) was a Brazilian sociologist. She earned a degree in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo in 1949, a Diploma of Graduate Studies in sociology, anthropology and politics in 1951, and a sociology PhD from the École pratique des hautes études in Paris in 1959. Her doctoral work, supervised by Roger Bastide, was titled The Holy War in Brazil: the Messianic Movement of Contestado. In 1963, the University of São Paulo published her dissertation as Le Messianisme au Brésil et dans le Monde. Her work is studied around the world.
She founded the Center for Urban and Rural Studies at the University of São Paulo and served as its professor, later becoming professor emeritus at USP. She spoke Spanish, French, English and Italian. She died in December 2018 at the age of 100.
