It was created on 17 June 1993 as Centre Universitaire du Nord-Kivu (CUNK) and was initially supervised by the University of Kisangani. In 1996 it became Centre Universitaire Extension de Goma (CUEG), and on 15 October 2005 it gained full university status by ministerial decree, changing its name to the University of Goma. The rector is Muhindo Mughanda. The university has over 6,000 students (as of 2024) and is affiliated with the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie. UNIGOM operates three campuses in Goma: Central Campus on the site of the former Goma Institute boarding school, Campus du Lac near Cap Kivu Hotel, and the Hospital Campus inside the Goma General Reference Hospital. The university offers programs across several faculties with instruction primarily in French, aiming to provide quality education, conduct research, and serve the community.
