JDS Narushio (SS-569)
JDS Narushio (SS-569) was the fourth Uzushio-class submarine of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Kobe, she was laid down on 8 May 1971, launched on 22 November 1972, and commissioned on 28 September 1973.
Narushio began service with the 1st Submarine Group, but on 28 September 1973 she was transferred to the 5th Submarine Group along with her sister ship Isoshio.
In November 1974, during the Yuyo Maru No. 10 incident, Narushio joined other JMSDF ships to help sink the stricken vessel. She fired four Mk37 torpedoes, but mechanical problems, misalignment, and insufficient warhead power prevented the sinking.
The submarine took part in Hawaii dispatch training periods in 1976 (July 24–October 15) and again in 1980 (January 28–April 24).
On 25 March 1982, Narushio ran aground in shallow water about 3 km north-northwest of the Hesaki Lighthouse at the Kanmon Straits’ east exit. After the tide rose, she refloated and continued operations.
She was reclassified as a special-service submarine, ATSS-8002, on 8 June 1990 and came under direct control of the 1st Submarine Group. Narushio was decommissioned on 17 March 1993 and was sunk as a target in August 1994.
Technical notes: Uzushio-class diesel-electric submarine, about 1,850 tons standard displacement, roughly 72 meters long, crew about 80, and torpedo armament.
