University of Central Florida College of Optics and Photonics
The University of Central Florida College of Optics and Photonics (COP) is a public college at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. The dean is David J. Hagan, Ph.D.
In 2004, COP became UCF’s first college dedicated to optics and photonics. Initially, it offered only master’s and doctoral programs. In 2013, the university approved a Bachelor of Science in Photonic Science and Engineering, the only photonics engineering bachelor’s degree in Florida and one of a few in the United States. Students earn a single degree from both COP and UCF’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, making them alumni of both colleges.
COP is home to three major centers: CREOL, the Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE), and the Townes Laser Institute.
- Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL): CREOL began in the 1980s and was established in 1987 to support Florida’s high-tech industry with research and education in optics and lasers. It focuses on all areas of optics, photonics, and lasers and has produced many graduates and research publications.
- Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE): FPCE was established in 2003 with a $10 million state grant. Its work includes nanophotonics, biophotonics, imaging and 3D displays, and ultra-high-bandwidth communications. FPCE has helped create jobs and filed numerous patents, delivering significant economic impact.
- Townes Laser Institute: Opened in 2007 in honor of Nobel Laureate Charles Townes, the Institute is linked to CREOL and FPCE and aims to develop next-generation laser technologies for medicine, advanced manufacturing, and defense. The state provided funds for facilities and a number of new faculty positions to support the Institute.
Overall, COP and its centers play a key role in education, research, and innovation in optics and photonics in Florida and beyond.
