University colleges in Ontario

Ontario university colleges are smaller campuses connected to a larger public university, called the parent campus. They are either affiliated or federated with the parent university. These colleges have existed for more than 100 years and began with Christian religious groups.

There are 24 university colleges in Ontario: 10 offer mostly secular programs and 14 offer mostly theological programs. The terms affiliated and federated are often used interchangeably, but they have different legal ties to the parent campus. Affiliated colleges typically have the parent university grant the degrees, so students earn their degree from the parent institution. Federated colleges involve two or more institutions joining to form a new university that is officially recognized and eligible for government funding.

Some Ontario colleges were affiliated with Laurentian University (Université Laurentienne) until the university’s financial crisis in 2021.
