University Charter School
University Charter School (UCS) is a charter school located in Lyon Hall on the University of West Alabama campus in Livingston, Alabama. It opened in 2018 for Pre-K through 8th grade with about 300 students and planned to add one grade each year until 12th grade. The student body was more than half Black and fewer than half White, and the media described UCS as Sumter County’s first in-practice racially integrated school. The Sumter County School District tried to block the opening with a court action in 2018. Historically, Sumter County public schools were segregated, and a private segregation academy operated until 2017.
