1982 in Israel

1982 was a year dominated by war and confrontations. In June, Israel launched Operation Peace for Galilee, invading southern Lebanon to push Palestinian militants away from the Israeli border. The fighting moved into Beirut and involved Israeli forces, Palestinian groups, and Lebanese militias. The war caused many deaths, injuries, and a large number of refugees, and it reshaped the security situation for years to come.

In September, the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Beirut were the site of a massacre carried out by Lebanese Christian militias with Israeli forces nearby. The event drew intense international condemnation and led to a government inquiry in Israel. The inquiry highlighted leadership failures and contributed to the resignation of the defense minister.

Throughout the year, Palestinian militant groups carried out attacks against Israeli targets, while Israel conducted counter-terrorism operations in Lebanon and along its borders as part of the broader conflict.

By the end of 1982, the Lebanon War had significantly altered Israel’s regional role and set the stage for ongoing military and political developments in the area.
