Uncanny X-Men 94
Uncanny X-Men #94, published in August 1975, marks the X-Men’s return after a period of reprints. From issues 67–93 the series mostly reprinted old stories because sales were low. In May 1975, Giant-Size X-Men #1 introduced a new, diverse team to save the X-Men, and with issue #94 the magazine was revived with big changes.
Most of the original X-Men quit. Cyclops stays as team leader, and a new group takes shape: Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. Banshee also joins. Sunfire leaves for Japan, and Thunderbird dies in issue #95.
This issue begins writer Chris Claremont’s 16-year run on Uncanny X-Men, which helped make the title one of Marvel’s top books for two decades. The story has the X-Men training in the Danger Room as new teammates learn to work together, while old tensions flare under Cyclops’s strict leadership.
In a separate threat, Count Nefaria and the Ani-Men seize a military base in the Colorado Rockies and threaten the world to pay ransom for their missiles. The Avengers enlist but cannot help, so the X-Men fly to Valhalla in the Blackbird. They learn that Nefaria has armed the Doomsmith System, which can only be shut down in a tight time window of 52 minutes. As they approach, Nefaria disables the Blackbird and the team faces a dangerous fall, leaving readers with a cliffhanger.
Collector note: Uncanny X-Men #94 is highly sought after. As of 2013, there were 18 copies graded 9.8. Some high prices have been paid for good copies, including sales around $26,500 in 2010 and $4,450 in 2004.
