New Theatre (Fort Smith, Arkansas)
New Theatre, Fort Smith, Arkansas
The New Theatre is a historic Beaux-Arts building at 11 North 10th Street in Fort Smith. Built in 1911 by the Boller Brothers of Kansas City and designed by Klaw and Erianger, it was modeled after New Amsterdam Theatre in New York. Its facade features decorative terra cotta tiles, brickwork, and elaborate border cartouches. It opened as a performing arts venue, but in the 1940s it became mainly a movie theater. The building closed in the 1970s, and restoration efforts have happened off and on since the 1990s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 18, 1999 (NRHP reference number 99001351). It is currently vacant.
