Pharasmanes III

Pharasmanes III was a king of Iberia (Kartli), in what is now central and eastern Georgia. He ruled roughly from 135 to 185 AD, succeeding his father Ghadam. He was only about one year old when his father died in 135, so his grandmother Ghadana of Armenia ruled as regent until he came of age.

Pharasmanes III had friendly relations with Rome. Ancient sources say he visited Emperor Antoninus Pius in Rome with his wife, son, and noble entourage. He was honored there, allowed to take part in sacrifices at the Capitol, and his equestrian statue was placed in the temple of Bellona. The emperor is said to have expanded Iberia’s territory, perhaps around 154 AD.

Some later accounts confuse this Rome visit with the earlier king Pharasmanes II. Pharasmanes III was a member of the Pharnavazid dynasty.
