Sir Thomas Wharton Academy
Sir Thomas Wharton Academy is a mixed-gender academy with a sixth form in Edlington, Doncaster, England. It educates students aged 11 to 18 and has about 1,082 pupils. The school’s motto is “Exceptional experiences. Successful lives.” It is part of the Maltby Learning Trust and falls under Doncaster local authority. The principal is Matthew McDonald and the chair is Andrew Battle.
The academy uses a tutor-group system and a house system with four houses: Cusworth (purple), Brodsworth (green), Chatsworth (yellow), and Wentworth (red). Each house has its own pastoral support team.
History and changes: the school opened in 1967 as Edlington Comprehensive School, later became Edlington School, then Sir Thomas Wharton Community College in 2009, gained academy status in 2013, and joined the Maltby Learning Trust in 2017, becoming Sir Thomas Wharton Academy.
It serves pupils from nearby areas including Balby, Braithwell, Conisbrough, Edlington, Loversall, Micklebring, Tickhill, Wadworth, Warmsworth and Woodfield Plantation. Feeder primary schools include Warmsworth Primary, Edlington Hilltop, Edlington Victoria, Wadworth Primary, Tickhill Estfeld and Tickhill St Mary’s.
