Umgeni Commando
Umgeni Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It was part of the South African Infantry Formation and the Territorial Reserve, and based at Umgeni. The unit was one battalion in size. Along with all other Commando units, it was disbanded after President Thabo Mbeki decided to end the Commando system. The phasing out took place between 2003 and 2008, with Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula saying it was due to the system’s role during the apartheid era.
