Niverville is a small, semi-rural hamlet and census-designated place in northern Columbia County, New York. It sits in the town of Kinderhook, near Kinderhook Lake, and stretches a bit into the nearby town of Chatham. About 1,500 people live there (1,508 at the 2020 census). The area covers roughly 3.4 square miles, with most of it land and a portion of it water from the lake.

Historically, Niverville grew from early Dutch settlement in the 1700s. The Niver family became influential in the area, building the first rye flour gristmill and a mansion in the mid-1800s. The community developed around the railroad, once called Kinderhook Station, and a railroad restaurant now known as the Niverville Pub. The post office opened in 1846, and parks along Kinderhook Lake drew visitors in the late 1800s, followed by an electric amusement park era at the turn of the century. The Niverville Fire Department was formed in 1916 and today operates from a large firehouse with a fleet of vintage and modern fire engines, hosting events like a Fourth of July fundraiser and a Halloween parade, with support from the Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Today, Niverville is served by the Valatie Free Library and lies within the Kinderhook Central School District (Ichabod Crane). New York State Route 203 runs along the lake’s eastern shore, linking to Valatie and Nassau. The area around Kinderhook Lake offers boating and fishing, and the community remains centered on the lake and its surroundings. Demographically, the area is mostly White, with a mix of other residents, and many households are family- based.
