Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem
Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem is a 2010 action game by Gameloft for iOS and Android, set in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. It is a single-player beat-em-up where you control Spider-Man using touch controls: move with an on-screen analog, attack with three buttons, and build up an energy meter for a powerful attack. You can chain up to 20 combos, use Spider-Sense to dodge enemy blows, and in some parts you swing between locations by tapping in rhythm.
The game has 12 levels and follows Spider-Man as he fights a wave of criminals and super villains. He faces foes from the Ultimate universe, including Sandman, Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin, Venom, and Doctor Octopus. A big explosion frees many villains and symbiotes, leading to a city-wide battle. Along the way, Spider-Man fights through police interference, teams up with S.H.I.E.L.D., and learns that Norman Osborn has dangerous plans. The story ends with Spider-Man defeating Green Goblin, doctors working on an antidote, and a moment of reassurance from a woman who had appeared at the start before Spider-Man swings away.
The game was shown at E3 2010, with a cinematic trailer released on August 27, 2010. It launched on iOS on September 1, 2010 and reached Android on April 14, 2011. It received generally favorable reviews, with the iOS version scoring about 85/100 on Metacritic. Critics praised the visuals and the combo system, and some called it one of the better action games on iOS at the time. Some noted control issues, especially on larger screens, and found certain boss battles frustrating.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem is no longer available to buy on the iOS App Store or Google Play Store. Exact sales figures weren’t released, but Gameloft said the game helped reach a milestone of 20 million downloads for their titles.
