The 1896 Yale Bulldogs football team played as an independent for Yale University. They finished with a 13–1 record under first-year head coach Sam Thorne and were led by captain Fred T. Murphy. Home games were at Yale Field.

They dominated early, shutting out nine opponents and winning the first 13 games by a total score of 212 to 29. Their only loss came in the final game, a 24–6 defeat to Princeton.

Two Yale players were consensus All-Americans: quarterback Clarence Fincke and tackle Fred T. Murphy. Leslie's Weekly also named three other Yale players to its first-team All-America list: ends Lyman Bass and Louis Hinkey, and center Burr Chamberlain.
