USNS Provo
USNS Provo (T-AG-173) was a Phoenix-class miscellaneous auxiliary ship in the U.S. Navy. It began life as the World War II Victory ship Drew Victory (MCV-691). Built by the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation in Portland, Oregon, it was laid down in April 1945, launched in June 1945, and completed in July 1945. During its merchant service it was renamed California and later Utah.
The ship was acquired by the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) and renamed Provo on November 20, 1962 (designated T-AG-173). It served with a civilian MSTS crew and operated from Subic Bay, Philippines, acting as a floating depot and delivery ship to support Navy ships and stations in Asia. In 1964 it took part in Operation Quick Release, delivering supplies from Japan and Subic Bay to Okinawa and Vietnam.
Provo was taken out of service around 1970 and was officially stricken in June 1973. It was sold for scrapping on August 31, 1973. Specifications: Phoenix-class, displacement about 6,700 tons light and 15,900 tons full; length 455 ft 3 in; beam 62 ft; draft 28 ft 1 in; propulsion steam turbine, single shaft, 8,500 hp; speed 17 knots; crew about 50. Its home port was Subic Bay, Philippines.
