Trolleybuses in Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, has the country’s only trolleybus network. It opened on October 29, 1987 and is part of the city’s public transport.
The system runs lines 2, 4 and 5.
The original fleet had about 40 ZiU-9 trolleybuses from the Soviet Union. In 2007, several secondhand Hyundai Aero City 540 trolleybuses from South Korea were added, converted from diesel to electric. A few more ZiU trolleybuses and two AKSM trolleybuses were also added over time.
By 2024, the fleet was mostly made up of new JEA 800D trolleybuses. Locals nicknamed the trolleybuses “goat carts” because of their strength.
