Bakkushan
Bakkushan was a German indie rock band from Mannheim. The name comes from the Japanese word bakkushan, meaning a woman who looks better from behind. The band formed in July 2007 at the Popakademie Mannheim, with Daniel Schmidt (singer), Christian Kalle (bass), Robert Kerner (guitar) and Jan Siekmann (drums). Their first EP appeared in 2007, built around the track Springwut. They gained early attention after winning music contests in 2008, and soon signed with EMI Virgin Records.
In 2010 they released their debut album Bakkushan (originally planned for 2009), preceded by the single Alles war aus Gold. They performed across Germany and Austria, and in April 2010 they appeared on MTV Home; the album reached number 96 on the German charts. The band represented Baden-Württemberg at the Bundesvision Song Contest on 1 October 2010, finishing ninth with Springwut.
In 2012 they released their second album Kopf im Sturm. The singles Böse Mädchen feiern besser and Nur die Nacht appeared in June 2012, with Nur die Nacht reaching number 95 on the German album chart. Kopf im Sturm was released on 13 July 2012, followed by the single Der letzte Mensch der Welt on 26 October 2012, and a Kopf im Sturm tour across Germany. Bakkushan was active from 2007 to 2015.
