Trachypepla galaxias
Trachypepla galaxias is a small moth from New Zealand, in the family Oecophoridae. It was first described by Edward Meyrick in 1883. The species is endemic to New Zealand and can be found across the country, mainly in native forests.
Adults are about 14–16 mm long and are active from October to February. They are nocturnal and attracted to light.
Little is known about its life cycle. As of 2014, scientists had not documented its larval foods. A related species, Trachypepla contritella, has larvae that feed on Usnea lichens, and it is hoped that T. galaxias does something similar.
The male lectotype (the specimen used to define the species) was collected in heath-like scrub and swamp near Hamilton and is kept at the Natural History Museum in London. Original specimens used for description came from Hamilton, Wellington, and the Bealey River.
In appearance, Meyrick described white forewings with grey markings and various dark spots and bands, with grey hindwings.
