Town Moor, Sunderland
Town Moor is a large public green space in Sunderland’s East End, also known as Hendon. It began as a public common in 1718, when Holy Trinity Church and the new Sunderland parish were created. The Moor used to be bigger and had many uses, including limestone and clay quarrying, rope-making, and in the past, bull, badger and bear baiting. Sunderland Barracks were built on its edge in the late 18th century. The area also had a railway station that was the end point of the Durham–Sunderland line.
