Timeline of Occupy Oakland
Occupy Oakland began on October 10, 2011, with people occupying Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in front of Oakland City Hall. It was part of the larger Occupy movement that started in New York City on September 17, 2011, and included other Bay Area sites like Occupy San Francisco and Occupy San Jose. The movement was inspired by the Arab Spring and protests in Greece, Spain, Britain, Chile, and Israel, and it followed US precursors such as the Wisconsin protests earlier in 2011. Oakland’s protest was also shaped by local history, including anger over the BART Police shooting of Oscar Grant in 2009–2010. Demonstrations often involved marches through downtown toward the plaza, and clashes with police with tear gas and arrests occurred as part of the protest activity.
