Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek
Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek (Tytus, Romek, and A'Tomek) is one of Poland’s best-known and longest-running comic series. It was created by Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski, known as Papcio Chmiel, in 1957 and continued in books until 2009, with special adventures published until the creator’s death in 2021. The story follows two Boy Scouts, Romek and A'Tomek, and Tytus de Zoo, a chimpanzee who can speak. They are helped by Professor T. Alent, a friendly eccentric scientist, and by Papcio Chmiel himself as a character.
The comics started in the magazine Świat Młodych and the first book appeared in 1966. The adventures mix scouting life, science fiction, time travel, and playful parodies. Some stories reflect Polish life and history, especially the changes in the 1990s. The dialogue blends teen slang, old Polish words, and Chmielewski’s wordplay with humor and satire.
The books are colorful, exciting and educational, which helped attract many young readers. Early stories sometimes included political jokes or commentary, but the series remains remembered for its fun, adventurous spirit and its charm of a monkey trying to act human.
By 2017 there were 31 albums, plus several special volumes and reprint collections. The Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek series is considered a Polish children's classic and one of the most lasting Polish comics.
