This Time is the fourth studio album by jazz vocalist Al Jarreau, released in 1980 by Warner Bros. Records and produced by Jay Graydon. It marked a shift toward a more R&B-oriented sound, helping Jarreau reach the mainstream while still succeeding on jazz charts. The album peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard 200, No. 6 on the R&B chart, and topped the Jazz chart. The single “Never Givin’ Up” earned a 1981 Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male, though it lost to George Benson’s Give Me the Night. This Time gave Jarreau his first top-40 entry on the Billboard 200 and his first top-10 on the R&B chart. His next album, Breakin’ Away, would be even more successful on both charts.
