Chaetoceros elegans is a species of diatom, a tiny single-celled alga. It belongs to the genus Chaetoceros in the family Chaetocerotaceae. The species was first described by Gutwinski in 1895. A 2017 study by Li and colleagues lists Dapeng Bay in Guangdong Province, China, as the type locality—the place where the original specimen was found. In taxonomic terms, diatoms are part of the domain Eukaryota and the group Bacillariophyta.
