These Days (Vince Gill album)
These Days is the eleventh studio album by American country singer Vince Gill and his first box set. It was released on October 17, 2006. The project runs four discs with 43 original songs, showing Gill’s range from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock. It was produced by Vince Gill, John Hobbs, and Justin Niebank and released by MCA Nashville. Recording took place in 2005–2006 at several Nashville studios, including Blackbird Studio, Emerald Sound Studios, Masterfonics, Ocean Way Nashville, Sound Kitchen, and The Sound House.
Gill invited a wide array of guests to contribute, such as Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, the Del McCoury Band, John Anderson, LeAnn Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Michael McDonald, and Buddy Emmons.
Gill opted for a box-set approach to include many talented guests rather than just a few famous names, inspired by the Beatles’ habit of releasing multiple albums in a year.
Commercially, the album debuted at No. 17 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 42,000 copies in its first week, and it peaked at No. 17.
Three singles were released, two as duets: “The Reason Why” with Alison Krauss reached No. 28 on the Hot Country Songs chart; “What You Give Away” with Sheryl Crow reached No. 43; and “How Lonely Looks” did not chart.
The album was nominated for two Grammys, including Album of the Year, and won Best Country Album. It has appeared on year-end lists, with People magazine ranking it No. 10 on its 2012 list of the Top 10 Best Albums of the Century (So Far) and Country Universe placing it No. 9 on its The 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade list.
Total running time is about 2 hours and 44 minutes.
