The World's Greatest SuperFriends
The World's Greatest SuperFriends is an American animated TV series that aired on ABC from September 22, 1979, to September 27, 1980. Made by Hanna-Barbera, it brings together DC Comics heroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, along with the Wonder Twins and Gleek. Each 22-minute episode features adventures inspired by folklore and fairy tales, and one story even takes the team to Middle-earth inspired by The Lord of the Rings.
Some plots mix in contemporary politics of the day, and the season is sometimes called the "Absentee Super Friends" because many episodes feature characters only in cameos. Notable episodes include Rub Three Times for Disaster, Lex Luthor Strikes Back, Space Knights of Camelon, The Lord of Middle Earth, The Planet of Oz, Universe of Evil, Terror at 20,000 Fathoms, and The SuperFriends Meet Frankenstein. Highlights include Lex Luthor disguising himself as Lois Lane to escape jail, enlisting sun-altering aliens to weaken Superman, and a story where Superman loses his memory after a meteor strike and must be helped on a medieval world.
The show was released on DVD as The World's Greatest Super Friends: And Justice for All (a Target exclusive) in 2013, with broader retail release planned later that year. A trivia note: the main title theme for the 2010 DC Super Friends: The Joker's Playhouse uses music from this series.
