The Turning Point (The Vampire Diaries)
The Turning Point is the tenth episode of the first season of The Vampire Diaries. It aired on November 19, 2009. The story was written by Barbie Kligman with teleplay by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, and it was directed by J. Miller Tobin.
Plot recap:
- Jenna refuses Logan’s entrance, and Logan reacts violently, attacking and killing a passerby.
- Jeremy finds an old journal from his dad filled with notes and drawings about strange creatures, which sparks his own drawing again.
- Damon and Stefan consider staying in Mystic Falls after learning a new vampire is in town. Sheriff Forbes informs them of the new threat, and Stefan pressures Damon to confirm if he’s involved.
- Caroline and Matt grow closer, a development noticed by Tyler and others. Bonnie is shaken by Damon’s attacks but grateful when Stefan saves her.
- Stefan warns Elena to be careful about the new vampire. Damon tries to track the newcomer using a watch Logan had stolen, but can’t do it alone and enlists Caroline’s help, then compels her to forget what she learns.
- The watch leads to a warehouse where Damon is ambushed and shot by Logan. Logan claims he was turned by someone else and hints at a larger plan involving the vampires trapped under Fell’s Church and Katherine.
- At school, tensions rise between Matt and Tyler. Alaric intervenes when their conflict threatens to get out of hand.
- Elena learns more about Stefan’s past and their growing connection. After a tense moment, Elena admits her love for Stefan, and they share a kiss and sleep together for the first time.
- Logan abducts Caroline, but Matt witnesses only part of the events. Alaric later stake-kills Logan when Logan attacks him, preventing another capture.
- The Sheriff finds Logan’s body and thanks Damon for his apparent killing, even though Damon does not know who actually killed Logan.
- Back at Stefan’s place, Elena discovers a picture of Katherine and realizes she looks like Elena. Stefan leaves to fetch a drink, and Elena notices Stefan’s necklace in a photo of Katherine, hinting at the dual identities.
- The episode ends on a dramatic cliffhanger: Elena drives home in tears after discovering Katherine’s resemblance to her, but a mysterious figure appears in the road. She hits the figure, her car flips, and the figure reanimates and walks toward her.
Reception:
The Turning Point drew about 3.57 million viewers in its original American broadcast, a slight drop from the previous episode. It received mostly positive reviews, with critics noting that the episode advances multiple storylines and adds rich mythology, while some felt it didn’t reach the high point of earlier scenes between the Salvatore brothers. Viewers praised the twists, character developments, and the suspenseful cliffhanger that set up future episodes.
