The Song is the nineteenth episode of Smash, Season 2 Episode 4. It aired on February 26, 2013, was directed by Michael Morris, and written by Bathsheba Doran. In the story, Broadway star Veronica Moore (Jennifer Hudson) hires Derek to direct her one-night concert. During rehearsal she sings “I Got Love,” but Derek wants a sexier version, which Veronica and her mother Cynthia (Sheryl Lee Ralph) oppose. Veronica tests Derek’s idea, but remains uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, Karen and Tom search for songs for Veronica. Jimmy and Kyle pitch ideas that include partial versions of “Chest of Broken Hearts” and “I’m Not Lost.” Tom isn’t convinced, so Kyle and Jimmy write a new song. They finish it, but Derek initially pushes Veronica to stay with his version. Jimmy struggles with drugs; Kyle finds him and they run through “Everybody Loves You Now.” Tom later convinces Derek to use Jimmy and Kyle’s song, and Veronica learns Bravo will film the concert, bringing a large audience. In the end, Veronica performs the sexed‑up version of “I Got Love” and then introduces Jimmy and Kyle’s new song “I Can’t Let Go,” which earns a standing ovation.

Five songs are featured: three originals—“I Can’t Let Go,” “I’m Not Lost,” and “Chest of Broken Hearts” (the last two heard only in part)—and two covers—“Everybody Loves You Now” and “I Got Love.” The originals “I Can’t Let Go” and the two covers were released as digital singles. Guest stars include Jennifer Hudson as Veronica Moore and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Cynthia Moore. The episode received mixed reviews (C from Sara Brady and C− from The A.V. Club) and was watched by about 3.0 million viewers in the U.S. with a 0.9 rating in the 18–49 demographic.
