Udo Mechels
Udo Mechels, born 10 May 1976 in Brussels, is a Belgian singer known as Udo. He won the first season of Belgium's The X Factor in 2005, after earlier appearing on Belgian Idols in 2003 where he reached the semi-finals.
His debut album, U-Turn, came out in 2006 with the hit single "Isn't It Time," a cover of The Babys. The song reached number one and helped earn him a gold record for U-Turn in 2007. He also won the TMF Award for Best New Artist in 2006 and the Radio 2 Breakthrough of the Year award. In 2007 he contributed the cover "Heb Ik Ooit Gezegd" to the Clouseau tribute album Braveau Clouseau, which topped the Belgian charts and went gold. He performed that song live in 2011 in Lier and it was praised as beautiful.
On 30 March 2007, Udo performed "Ik Mis Je Zo" by Will Tura on a Flemish TV show and won; the single was released on 19 April 2007 with a French version, "Tu Me Manques." That song earned a gold record in September 2007. His next album, Good Things Coming, followed in January 2008. He also leads a live band called Udo Live!, which began in 2007. In 2014 he took part in Belgium’s Eurovision national selection with "Hero (In Flanders Fields)" and finished sixth. Udo has written and co-written many songs for other artists as well.
