The Ocean Hop
The Ocean Hop
The Ocean Hop is a 1927 animated short featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. It was produced by Charles Mintz and George Winkler and directed by Walt Disney. In the story, Oswald enters an airplane race across the Atlantic. His tough rival Peg Leg Pete taunts him and even gums his plane to the ground, sticking it with chewing gum. As Pete takes the lead, Oswald builds a balloon-powered plane with the help of a long dachshund dog. He performs well at first but is shot down by Pete over Paris. After parachuting into Paris, Oswald is cheered by locals and ends up winning the race. Peg Leg Pete would later become Disney’s Pete, the cat. The Ocean Hop was reissued in 1932 by Walter Lantz Productions with added music and sound effects, and that version is the only known surviving one. The short entered the public domain in 1955 because the copyright was not renewed. It was released again on December 11, 2007 as part of Walt Disney Treasures: The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
