1848 United States presidential election in Rhode Island
Rhode Island held its presidential election on November 7, 1848. Four electors were chosen for the Electoral College. The Whig candidate Zachary Taylor won the state with 60.77% of the vote (6,779), defeating Democratic candidate Lewis Cass with 32.68% (3,646) and Free Soil candidate Martin Van Buren with 6.54% (730). Taylor received all four of Rhode Island’s electoral votes. Running mates were Millard Fillmore for Taylor, William O. Butler for Cass, and Charles Francis Adams Sr. for Van Buren. The pre-election president was James K. Polk, and Taylor became president after the election. Rhode Island was Taylor’s strongest state by share of the popular vote.
