Saranap, California
Saranap is a small residential community in central Contra Costa County, California. It covers about 1.14 square miles, all land, and sits about 180 feet above sea level. In 2020, 5,830 people lived there, with a density of around 5,140 people per square mile. Saranap is bordered by Walnut Creek to the south and east and by Lafayette to the north and west. The ZIP code is 94595, but mail is addressed to Walnut Creek.
Most of Saranap falls within the Walnut Creek Elementary School District, with some areas in the Lafayette Elementary School District; all students attend schools in the Acalanes Union High School District.
The place was once called Dewing Park and got its current name from the Sacramento Northern Railway in the early 20th century. The local railway station was named after the developer’s mother, Sara Napthaly. Saranap is largely unincorporated, and residents have resisted annexation by nearby cities, preferring county governance and local covenants. A small annexation to Lafayette occurred in recent decades, adding just one street.
Demographics: In 2020, about 5,830 people lived in Saranap. The population is roughly 71% White, 11% Asian, and 12% from two or more races, with about 11% identifying as Hispanic or Latino. There were about 2,250 households, with an average size of 2.51, and about 69% of homes were owner-occupied. The median age was 43.1 years.
