The Maines Brothers Band
The Maines Brothers Band is a Texas-based country music group formed by Lloyd, Donnie, Kenny, and Steve Maines. The band grew from a family act started by James and Sonny Maines in the 1950s, who performed as The Little Maines Brothers Band before the younger brothers took over in the mid-1970s. They are based in Lubbock, Texas, and over the years have included members such as Jerry Brownlow, Randy Brownlow, Cary Banks, Richard Bowden, and LaTronda Maines, with Terry Allen sometimes collaborating with them.
They released albums named after Texas places, including Hub City Moan (1981), Rt. 1 Acuff (1980), and Panhandle Dancer (1982). In the mid-1980s they recorded for Mercury/Polygram and had a top-20 country hit in 1985 with "Everybody Needs Love on Saturday Night." They were inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame in 1993.
The band has reunited for several shows, including opening for the Dixie Chicks in 2000 in Lubbock. Reunion performances followed at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre (2007, 2011, 2013, 2016) and at the Exhibit Hall in 2015. On December 2, 2022, they played at Texas Tech University's Carol of Lights to celebrate its centennial.
In 2023, a section of Farm to Market Road 40 in Acuff was named The Maines Brothers Band Highway in their honor.
