The Greenbrier Companies is an American public company that designs, builds, refurbishes, and leases railcars and related equipment. Based in Lake Oswego, Oregon, it serves railroads in North America and Europe and runs production and service facilities around the world, including in the United States, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Brazil.

They manufacture intermodal and conventional railcars such as boxcars, flatcars, hopper cars, tank cars, gondolas, and auto racks, along with wheelsets and spare parts. They also offer railcar maintenance, management, and leasing services through GBX Leasing and Greenbrier Leasing, plus a maintenance services business across the U.S.

As of fiscal year 2023, Greenbrier reported about $3.49 billion in revenue and employed around 15,400 people. The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GBX and is part of the S&P 600 and Russell 2000.

A brief history: The company traces its roots to Gunderson Bros., a railcar maker founded in the early 20th century in Oregon. It was acquired by FMC Corporation in 1965, and Greenbrier acquired the Gunderson railcar business in the 1980s. Greenbrier went public in 1994 and grew through acquisitions, including TrentonWorks in 1995 and American Railcar Industries in 2019. In 2022–2023, longtime founder Bill Furman stepped back as CEO and Lorie Tekorius became CEO. In 2023, the company sold Gunderson Marine and completed other restructurings, including full ownership of GBX Leasing and the launch of Greenbrier Vagon in Turkey.

In 2019 Greenbrier published its first ESG report and now follows SASB standards to report sustainability data.
