The Fishermen is a bronze sculpture by Jim and Christina Demetro, installed in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. It was unveiled on June 1, 2018.
Description
The sculpture shows a fisherman and his grandson napping, along with a dog, a cat, a pelican, and a bucket of fish.
Inspiration
Jim Demetro has described a real moment that inspired the work: a pelican grabbed a fish from the bucket, couldn’t swallow it, and the fisherman helped by taking the fish back and shooing the pelican away.
Inscription and purpose
An inscription on the statue honors all fishermen and their contributions to Puerto Vallarta. It notes the support of citizens, the City Council, Arturo Dávalos Peña, Ramón González Lomelí, Hotel Playa Los Arcos, and the sculptors Jim Demetro and Christina Demetro, dated May 31, 2018.
History
Before the unveiling, the sculptors created a clay model and raised funds for the bronze by letting people “co-sculpt” the artwork through donations.

The sculpture is in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. Coordinates are about 20.6013°N, 105.2386°W, placing it in the city’s public art landscape.
