The Girl with a Hatbox
The Girl with a Hatbox, also called Moscow That Laughs and Weeps, is a 1927 Soviet silent romantic comedy-drama film directed by Boris Barnet. It stars Anna Sten, Vladimir Mikhailov, and Vladimir Fogel. The movie was made to promote government bonds.
Natasha and her grandfather live near Moscow and make hats for Madame Irène. Madame and her husband tell the housing committee that Natasha rents a room from them, giving the lazy husband a place to rest. A railroad clerk named Fogelev loves Natasha, but she falls for Ilya, a clumsy student who sleeps at the train station. To help Ilya, Natasha marries him and brings him to Madame’s to live in the room the committee thinks is Natasha’s. Meanwhile Madame’s husband gives Natasha a lottery ticket that he thinks will lose; when the ticket turns out to be a winner, trouble follows just as Natasha and Ilya are about to fall in love.
