The Chief is a British crime drama that aired on ITV from 1990 to 1995. It ran five series with 35 episodes and follows the fictional Eastland Constabulary, focusing on Chief Constable John Stafford (Tim Pigott-Smith) as he tries to keep his volatile team in line. In later seasons, the focus shifts to his successor, Alan Cade (Martin Shaw). Produced by Anglia Television, the series is set and filmed mainly in East Anglia and is known for its political storylines, including clashes with the Home Office and local politicians. Former Chief Constable John Alderson advised the production to add realism.

For home release, The Chief has appeared on DVD in Australia (across multiple volumes) and as The Chief Collection in 2018. A tie-in book, On Duty with The Chief by Peter Haining, was published in 1995. In 2010, Network released Region 2 DVDs of The Chief, keeping the original broadcasts intact with no extra features.
