Arctiina
Arctiina is a subtribe of moths in the family Erebidae. They are part of the group commonly known as tiger moths and lichen moths.
Classification (simplified):
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Lepidoptera
- Family: Erebidae
- Subtribe: Arctiina
Taxonomic history in brief:
- They used to be treated as the tribe Arctiini within the family Arctiidae.
- A major reclassification moved Arctiidae into the subfamily Arctiinae of Erebidae, and the subfamilies were lowered to tribes. The old Arctiini became the subtribe Arctiina.
- So, the name Arctiini now refers to a larger tribe that includes this subtribe.
- A 2016 study by Rönkä and colleagues found that many genera were synonyms of others, which narrowed the genera actually placed in Arctiina. Euerythra and Kodiosoma are now placed in Phaegopterina.
Taxonomy is ongoing, so the exact list of genera in Arctiina can change with new research.
