Tetabiate
Tetabiate, also known as Juan Maldonado Waswechia Beltran, was a Yaqui leader who fought to protect Yaqui society from Mexican efforts to absorb them after Cajemé’s death in 1887. His Yaqui name Tetaviecti means "Rolling Stone." He was born on August 28, 1857, in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, and was baptized on August 31, 1857, at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Hermosillo.
After Cajemé died on April 23, 1887, Tetabiate led the Yaqui in guerrilla warfare against the Porfirio government for 14 years. He was killed on July 9, 1901, in the Bacatete Mountains of Sonora, while fighting Mexican forces under Loreto Villa. It was reported that his son Guillermo continued the fight after his death.
