1984 Missouri gubernatorial election
The 1984 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 1984. Republican John Ashcroft, then Missouri Attorney General, defeated Democrat Ken Rothman, the Lieutenant Governor, and Independent Bob Allen. Ashcroft won 1,194,506 votes (56.7%), while Rothman received 913,700 votes (43.3%). Incumbent Republican Governor Kit Bond did not seek a third non-consecutive term. Bond had previously become governor in 1972, lost reelection in 1976, and regained the office in 1980. Ashcroft and Bond would later serve in the United States Senate from 1995 until 2001.
