Kainan Bay is an iceport on the front of the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica, about 37 nautical miles (70 km) northeast of the northwest end of Roosevelt Island. It was discovered in January 1902 by the British National Antarctic Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. The bay was named by the Japanese Antarctic Expedition, led by Shirase Nobu, which landed on the ice shelf there in January 1912 from the ship Kainan Maru. Little America V, the main U.S. base during the International Geophysical Year (1957–58), was established at this site in December 1955. The location is around 78°10′S, 162°30′W.
