More Than Scientists

More Than Scientists is a nonprofit based in Seattle that helps climate scientists share their personal views about climate change with the public. Through short videos, scientists speak directly to viewers, explaining that climate change is real and what it could mean for communities, families, and the future.

Launched in 2015 with about 30 scientists, the program has grown to more than 80 participating scientists and over 300 videos (by 2023). Notable contributors include scientists from top universities and research centers such as MIT, Harvard, University of Washington, University of Colorado Boulder, NCAR, NOAA, CIRES, NSIDC, and LASP.

The videos focus on personal and societal impacts rather than just the science. They show why scientists are concerned and how climate change could affect people’s lives—everything from ecosystems and food to water, oceans, storms, and future generations.

Context for the project: in 2013, about 97% of climate scientists agreed that human-caused climate change is real, but public understanding lagged. In 2015, around 70% of the public trusted scientists on global warming, highlighting the need for better communication about the science and its effects.

Topics covered include impacts on ecosystems, food supply, forests, society, oceans, water, storms and disasters, families, future generations, and adaptation to climate change. Many videos also introduce the scientists themselves.

Founders are Eric Michelman (director) and Dargan Frierson (University of Washington). Free Range Studios led the campaign strategy and website development.
