Joe Phillips
Joe Phillips (born February 13, 1969) is an American artist known for gay-themed illustrations, erotic animation, and early superhero comics. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and studied at the Northside School of the Arts. After spending time in Europe doing street art, he returned to the U.S. and began working on comics, including Southern Knights.
His big break in comics came in 1988 with eight issues of Speed Racer for NOW Comics, followed by penciling Mister Miracle for DC Comics from 1989 to 1991. He also drew issues of Wonder Woman and worked on titles for DC and Marvel, such as Justice League of America, Silver Surfer, X-Men, Legion of Super-Heroes, The Incredible Hulk, and Lobo. He helped found Gai-Jin Studios. In 1992 he penciled a Timber Wolf story arc for Legion of Super-Heroes, and in 1996 he created the Dark Horse character Heretic. He later worked on Captain America, Wolverine, Green Lantern, and Superboy, and did a Doctor Who comic in 2008.
Phillips later focused on LGBTQ+ themed art. XY Magazine hired him to create a comic strip series called “Joe Boy.” In 1999 he co-founded Xodus USA, selling gay-themed clothing through International Male until 2000, then produced calendars and other print materials for 10% Productions. He created adult animations, including Cumquest (a Star Trek spoof) and The House of Morecock, about a gay paranormal investigator. Morecock became popular and earned a 2002 GayVN award.
He published calendars and books such as Boys Will Be Boys (2001 calendar, 2003 book; an extended edition came out in 2007) and helped launch Xodus Magazine in 2003. He did artwork for various gay media and for the TV show Queer as Folk. In 2006 he released Stonewall & Riot: The Ultimate Orgasm, a 3D animated film that was nominated for a GayVN award. He created promotional art for Bud Light and Masterbeat CDs, and his music video work earned a LOGO Music Video of the Year award in 2007 for Ari Gold. He also won a Nicky Award for Outstanding Community Artist in 2009.
In 2013 he animated and directed Matt Fishel’s music video “When Boy Meets Boy,” a project praised by Out Magazine and The Gay UK, and won RightOutTV’s Best Pop/Rock Video that year. He also created artwork for Matt Fishel’s debut album Not Thinking Straight and for several singles.
