Symphony No. 4 (Hartmann)
Hartmann’s Fourth Symphony is a string-orchestra work by German composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann. It was finished in 1946–47 and partly grows out of his 1938 Concerto for strings and soprano. He later revised it to add a new purely instrumental third and closing movement, marked Adagio appassionato. The second movement, Adagio di molto, risoluto, contains references to Hartmann’s First String Quartet from 1933. A typical performance lasts about 33 minutes. The symphony was premiered in this form by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hans Rosbaud in Munich on 2 April 1948, before the premiere of his Third Symphony.
