Swedish Hospital
Swedish Hospital, formerly Swedish Covenant Hospital, is a nonprofit teaching hospital on Chicago’s north side. It has 312 licensed beds and more than 600 physicians and 2,500 employees. It joined Endeavor Health in 2019. The hospital offers more than 50 medical specialties, including spine and brain surgery, integrative cancer care, heart care with electrophysiology, women’s health and childbirth, and a 24-hour emergency department. It is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association’s Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program.
Founded in 1886 as Home of Mercy by Swedish Evangelical Covenant Church mission friends, the hospital started a nurse training program in 1899 and by 1923 had 50 doctors recognized by major medical groups. It expanded over the years, was a Planetree member from 2004 to 2009, affiliated with St George’s, University of London in 2014, and opened the Mayora Rosenberg Women’s Health Center that year. In 2019 NorthShore University HealthSystem bought the hospital and renamed it Swedish Hospital in 2020.
Today, Swedish Hospital runs the Chicago Brain & Spine Institute (opened in 2010) and offers advanced cardiac services, including electrophysiology and radiation-free ablations, along with a Chest Pain Center. It is designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care and has Magnet status in nursing. The Galter LifeCenter on campus provides fitness and wellness programs.
