Swap.com
Swap.com was an online thrift and consignment store based in Downers Grove, Illinois, with a large fulfillment center in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. It sold pre-owned clothing and accessories for babies, kids, maternity, men and women. Sellers mailed their items to Swap.com, which checked quality, stored the items, and sold them to shoppers. The platform charged sellers a service fee of $1.50 plus 30% of the sale price, plus an $11.99 inbound processing fee per box.
The service began in late 2012 after Netcycler acquired Swaptree and rebranded it as Swap.com in 2013. It started in Addison, Illinois, then moved to Bolingbrook and expanded to a 360,000-square-foot facility, with further growth in Bolingbrook by 2015. Swap.com broadened its offerings, launching women’s apparel in 2014 and men’s apparel in 2016, and eventually listing more than 2 million items.
The company attracted outside funding, including a $4 million Series A in 2014 and a $20 million Series B in 2016. In 2019, Swap.com reported about $15 million in revenue. On February 17, 2023, Eagle Filters Group, which held a 15% stake, wrote down its Swap.com shares to zero, signaling financial trouble. Swap.com is listed as defunct in 2023.
Key people included co-founders Juha Koponen (chief data scientist) and Jussi Koskinen (chief technology & product officer), and CEO Antonio Gallizio.
