Sunder Das Khungar
Sunder Das Khungar was an Indian civil servant and civil engineer who served as the general manager of the Bhakra Dam project. He proposed that the dam, originally built for irrigation, should also generate electricity by adding five hydroelectric units. In 1960, he headed the Khungar Commission, set up by the Ministry of Irrigation and Power to review the water management of the Damodar Valley Corporation. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 1955 for his contributions to civil service.
