Steve Parry (swimmer)
Steve Parry (Stephen Benjamin Parry), born 2 March 1977, is a former English swimmer who competed for Great Britain and England. He swam mainly the butterfly events, especially the 100m and 200m distances.
Career highlights
- Joined Stockport Metro and set a Commonwealth record at the 2000 US Nationals in Seattle.
- 2000 Sydney Olympics: first Olympics; finished 4th in the 200m butterfly.
- 2004 Athens Olympics: won Britain’s first Olympic swimming medal in eight years, a bronze in the 200m butterfly, behind Michael Phelps and Takashi Yamamoto.
- Commonwealth Games: bronze in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur 200m butterfly; in 2002 Manchester, silver in the 200m butterfly and bronze in a relay event.
- National championships: 100m butterfly title in 1997; eight-time champion in the 200m butterfly (1995, 1996, 1997, 2000–2004).
- Retired from competitive swimming in 2005.
Post-swimming life
- Co-founded Total Swimming with Adrian Turner and Rebecca Adlington to train young swimmers.
- In 2022, JD Sports bought 60% of Total Swimming.
- Brief radio host on BBC Radio Merseyside; later worked for BBC Sport covering the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
- Diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009, shortly after marrying his wife Thea; had the affected testicle removed to treat it.
- Became a father in early 2012.
- Awarded MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to swimming.
