The Royal Bank of Scotland £20 note
The Royal Bank of Scotland £20 note is a polymer banknote and the third largest denomination issued by the bank. The current design, introduced in 2020, features Catherine Cranston, a tea room entrepreneur, on the front and a pair of red squirrels on the back.
RBS has issued £20 notes since 1727. Early notes were monochrome and printed on one side. Scottish banknotes are not legal tender in Scotland, but they are legal currency and are generally accepted across the United Kingdom, backed by the issuing banks. The £20 note was part of the Ilay series, which began in 1987 and showed Lord Ilay on the front with a Brodick Castle scene on the back. On March 5, 2020, a new polymer £20 note was released, replacing Lord Ilay with Catherine Cranston on the front and keeping the red squirrels on the back.
