Steve Vickers (ice hockey)
Steve Vickers (born April 21, 1951) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who spent ten seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers from 1972 to 1982. A left winger, he was born in Toronto, Ontario, stood 6 feet tall and weighed 185 pounds. He was drafted 10th overall in 1971 and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 1973 after scoring 53 points (30 goals, 23 assists) in his first season. Vickers formed a strong two-way line with Walt Tkaczuk and Bill Fairbairn and later became a key scorer on the Rangers’ first line with Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle. His best season came in 1974-75, when he hit 41 goals and was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team. He played in the NHL All-Star Games in 1975 and 1976. Notable moments include becoming the first Ranger to score hat tricks in two consecutive games in 1972 and setting a Rangers single-game record with seven points in 1976. His final season saw a drop in production, and he finished his career in the minor leagues with the Springfield Indians before retiring. In 2009, he was ranked No. 18 among the 100 Rangers greats.
